The Association - Purpose & Objective
Pineapple from Kerala, known as "Vazhakulam Pineapple", is marketed throughout India and also in gulf countries. "Vazhakulam Pineapple" got geographical indication registration in 2009. Pineapple production in Kerala and its marketing is taken up, in tune with the developments in technology and trends worldwide, by educated youth in a commercial scale as a profession. The Pineapple Farmers Association, Vazhakulam has a pivotal role for this. The Pineapple Farmers Association is organizing pineapple festivals at regular intervals with the objective of promotion of pineapple production and marketing. With this objective, Pineapple Farmers Association is organizing training programmes, seminars, competitions etc during the festivals.
The "Pineapple Festival 2012" is scheduled to be organized on 16th and 17th January 2012. There will be participation of Jeevan TV, Mathrubhumi, State Horticulture Mission, Nadukkara Agro Processing Co. Ltd, State Agriculture Department, Kerala Agricultural University, ManjalloorGramaPanchayat etc. In the festival, central ministers, state ministers, M.P.s, M.L.A.s, Vice-Chancellor (KAU) et. al., will be participating in various functions. The festival will also be a meeting of all the pineapple growers, pineapple traders and pineapple processing industries.
Every year the P.F.A conducts a three day Agriculture Fair at Vazhakulam. This is a festival of Pineapple farmers. The association presents the 'Pineapple Sree' Award to the best Pineapple Farmer. The best Pineapple Farmer in Kerala is selected by a team of Experts from Kerala Agricultural University.
The programmes in the Festival includes
1) Training on "Management of pineapple during summer". This will be conducted on 16.1.2012. About 200 farmers from different parts of the state is expected to participate. Major topics include Management of pineapple in controlling major pest and disease in the new organic policy regime of the government, maintaining optimum yield and quality, limiting production cost etc.
2) Training on "Pineapple home processing". This will be conducted on 17.1.2012. The training will be given to house wives, unemployed youths, small entrepreneurs etc. About 200 participants are expected. Apart from training, exhibition, competition and sale of home processed pineapple products like jam, Squash, candies, pickles, cakes, vines etc are also organized.
3) Exhibition on "Pineapple based products and technologies".
4) Competition were also organized and awards will be given to the best Pineapple farmer, Media award to the best media person who contributed for the promotion of pineapple, best pineapple processing industry, best pineapple trader, best home processed products, best labourer etc.
