Plantation Methods

Planting as a pure crop
Planting as a Pure Crop
Planting as a Pure Crop
The land is prepared by digging in the area to be planted at 90 cm width in rows/strips, leaving the inter-spaces undisturbed. However, ploughing is also adopted in level land. Planting is done in paired rows of 45 cm distance between rows and 30 cm between suckers. Suckers are planted in triangular method in the paired rows. Inter-space between the paired rows is kept at 150-180 cm. Contour planting is adopted in sloppy areas.

Planting as an Inter-Crop in Rubber
Normally pineapple is planted as a paired row in between two rows of rubber. Some farmers adopt three rows instead of two rows of pineapple in between two rows of rubber. As an intensive cultivation few farmers even plant crosswise also leaving only a square of 1-1.5 m around the rubber plant and walking space along the rows.

Spacing between rows in a paired row is normally 45 cm and between plants in a row is 30 cm. Once planted, the crop is maintained for 3-4 years, after which it is removed. When rubber is newly planted or replanted, there is no income from that area for the first 6-7 years. Hence planting of pineapple as an inter-crop along with rubber planting has become very popular as it assures some income from that area during the initial years.

In coconut garden also, planting is done in paired rows. Spacing between two paired rows is maintained at 150-180 cm. The basin of the coconut palm is left free at a radius of 180 cm. The remaining area is planted in rows as in the case of pure crop.

Planting in Reclaimed Paddy Fields
For planting in paddy fields, raised beds of 150-165 cm width and convenient length are made. This is made by digging channels of 60 cm width and 60-90 cm depth, in between the beds. The excavated soil is used for raising beds. One paired row is planted in a bed.
