Variety
The popular variety under cultivation in Vazhakulam
area is the Mauritius variety. It is a queen type variety having spiny
leaf margins. The crown is also spiny. The average fruit weight is 1250
- 1500 g. When fully ripe, its fruit and pulp are golden yellow in colour.
The fruit is more sweet and crisp but less juicy than Kew variety. The
Mauritius variety is grown and marketed mainly for fresh fruit consumption.

| Planting
Season Main season of planting is April-May. But it is also
planted in almost all months depending on the availability of land and
planting material, avoiding the heavy rainy period in June-July. Planting
in summer months are also practiced in Kerala as it gets summer showers.
Planting in converted paddy fields is done during summer months only.
Hence, practically fresh fruits are available throughout the year from
Vazhakulam

| Cropping
System The pineapple is mainly grown as an inter-crop in
rubber plantation during the initial period of 3-4 years. It is also grown
as an inter-crop in coconut gardens and as pure crop in reclaimed paddy
fields. In limited areas, it is grown as pure crop in garden lands. It
is mainly grown as a rainfed crop. However, irrigation is done wherever
water is available. The harvesting will be done at 11-13 months stage
after planting. The fruits will be ready for harvest 130 –135 days
after ethephon application.
